5 websites you should bookmark for climate, environment and sustainability updates

As someone keenly watching how the world deals with its growing environmental problems, and as someone who is looking for hope (sometimes desperately) in an often gloomy outlook for our future, I have scoured the internet and spoken to many friends and colleagues for the most reliable resources to refer to.

Over the last four years, I have come to rely on these 5 websites. They will give you pretty much everything you need in this field — science updates, editorials, opinion pieces and current affairs.

What’s important to note that most, if not all, of these websites run on philanthropic, donor, or subscription support. I, therefore, trust their journalism. They are usually my first sources of information on a topic before I do my own research and analysis.

Down To Earth

For the Indian reader, this is a top recommendation. Down To Earth is a fortnightly magazine covering stories on the environment and development in India. Their website is an excellent place to browse for news updates and excellent in-depth articles and opinion pieces. This was one of the first websites I came across in my career and has been a reliable resource throughout.

Mongabay

Named after an island in Madagascar, this is another resource that is great for a reader looking for India-specific news, but Mongabay also has a worldwide presence with issues/articles in several languages. One of the best features I find on Mongabay is their breakdown of scientific papers into easily digestible science articles that help you avoid the brain fog that papers tend to give you. They also have in-depth pieces under their “special reporting projects” that make for great reads.

Yale E360

This website is run by the Yale School of Environment. They have worldwide coverage on 8 topics: climate, biodiversity, policy, energy, oceans, food & agriculture, solutions and cities. Yale E360 is often the starting point for my dives into rabbit holes that last several days and weeks on a particular topic! I especially enjoy their opinion pieces and have referred to several for my blogs, articles and videos.

A greener life, a greener world

Since it is UK-based, this blog is ideal for someone looking for European environmental news. I found it as I browsed the WordPress Reader and what a find this was! While I have their page bookmarked on my laptop, I often tap on the WordPress app to read their latest posts during waiting times in the metro or the coffee shop, as they are well-written, easy-to-read and insightful.

Carbon Brief

I came across Carbon Brief while looking for resources to follow the updates around CoPs. They did not disappoint! (Check out their breakdown of CoP26 to get an idea.) This is a wonderful resource for international updates. They have excellent graphics and extremely detailed articles that give a wonderful insight into whatever topic they cover. They also have a Daily Brief section; this tends to focus on European, American and Chinese developments more, and I like to know what is happening around the world every day.

Bear in mind that these are international sources, and if you are looking for more regional, national, or local news, you can’t go wrong with your daily newspaper!
